Just some news from web

News of Ekaterinburg

Ekaterinburg can take the third place on population among Russian cities

Data of population census which is being realized these days can push Ekaterinburg on the third place among Russian cities in unofficial rating, Nakanune.Ru informs referring to the Press Secretary of the Head of Ekaterinburg Konstantin Pudov.

Population of the Ural capital grows every year that allowed to leave behind Nizhniy Novgorod three years ago. By the results of present census Ekaterinburg can also leave behind Novosibirsk.

«Annually the population of Ekaterinburg increases approximately by 9 thousand people. Roundly 20 thousand people are required to catch up with Novosibirsk. More accurate data which will be given by this census is necessary for us», - Konstantin Pudov has noted.

He also added that among cities with a population of one million or more, capitals of entities and federal districts there was «unpublished table of ranks, the table of federal investment, investment attractiveness for private investors - Russian and foreign ones».

«Therefore census is very important, in particular for introducing clarity into the data on population of the city. If we take the third place, it will be important», - Konstantin Pudov has added.

It is necessary to notice that for January, 1st, 2010, according to the Administration of Ekaterinburg, 1 million 372 thousand and 800 people lived in the Ural capital. Real population of Ekaterinburg taking into account unregistered dwellers by different estimations made from 1.5 up to 1.6 million people.

And some more,

As you can see there are 11 cities with population more than million. For example, in China the number of same cities is 99. It's incredible.

History

The city was founded in 1723 by Vasily Tatischev and Georg Wilhelm de Gennin and named after Saint Catherine, the namesake of Tsar Peter the Great's wife Empress Catherine I (Yekaterina). The official date of the city's foundation is 18 November 1723. It achieved town status in 1796.

Soon after the Russian Revolution, on 17 July 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, his wife, Alexandra, and their children were executed by the Bolsheviks at the Ipatiev House in this city. In 1977 the Ipatiev House was destroyed by order of Boris Yeltsin, who later became the first President of the Russian Federation. President Yeltsin represented the people at the funeral of the Tsar in 1998.

In the 1930s, Yekaterinburg became a large industrial center of Russia. It was the time when the famous Uralmash was built, becoming the biggest heavy machinery factory in Europe.

During World War II, many government technical institutions and whole factories were relocated to Yekaterinburg away from the war-affected areas (mostly Moscow), with many of them staying in Yekaterinburg after the victory. The Hermitage Museum collections were also partly evacuated from Leningrad to Sverdlovsk in July 1941 and remained there until October 1945.

In the 1960s, in the days of Khrushchev's government, a number of lookalike five-story apartment blocks sprung up all over the city. Most of them still remain today in Kirovsky, Chkalovsky, and other residential areas of Yekaterinburg.
